Innocent Beings is a wonderful new prospective on the case for animal rights. Barbara presents the information in a friendly, easy-to-read format, and does so from the animals' perspective! I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a middle grade/young adult at home, or anyone interested in a fresh new twist to the animal rights movement.
Barbara takes us on a unique journey of awakening our hearts and minds and does so in an extremely clever and creative way. Her novella offers a vivid depiction of an awakening of compassion and courage… when the heart opens up to empathy and pure understanding. Moreover, Barbara delivers prose that can be consumed over and over again, especially when a need for compassionate guidance is needed in confronting our own naivety in how we treat the living beings we share this planet with.
I am terrible at writing reviews, so I will keep this brief. I just want to say that I loved this beautifully written book. It made me laugh and cry. It left an indelible mark on my heart and soul. Thank you, Barbara, for bestowing this beautiful gift to our troubled world.
This book does a wonderful job of taking what otherwise could be a dreary topic and is able to still share the stories of these farmed animals through a very enjoyable and delightfully readable story. It also manages to master the task of presenting the philosophical concepts underlying the issue of farming animals in such a way the children will be made to think and draw conclusions for themselves. Yet, all of this, it a charming whimsical kid appropriate book! Highly recommend getting this book.
Through Innocent Beings, Barbara cleverly and humorously gives voice to the animal’s perspective. Barbara also teaches us that old clichés like “milk does a body good,†and that the raising of animals for butchering is done without consequences are passé. Those looking for an alternative and healthier lifestyle that also takes into account a more humane approach to the animals that we have for so long taken for granted will find Barbara's presentation entertaining and informative. She even provides a checklist of goals and activities to help guide each new student on their individual paths of discovery.
What a beautiful book! I recommend this highly for anyone interested in discovering the compassion and need for justice already within us all for our fellow earthlings. Though it was written for middle school ages, I found it a easy and compelling read for myself, too. It will definitely help those of us who read it to hear the voices of the animals who are so often ignored.
Innocent Beings is a charming fantasy story used as a framework for conveying the facts of the atrocious treatment of farm animals. The story provides a voice for the voiceless in a figurative as well as a literal sense.
It becomes clearer every day that our shameful treatment of the other sentient beings we share this planet with is a recipe for disaster for our health, for the environment, and most certainly for the non-humans themselves. The only way things will ever change is for people to actually acknowledge the facts that are all too easy to disregard as a matter of convenience.
This book provides an entertaining, humorous, and touching story that I think will help some people make the connection between their daily actions and the violence and misery that result from those actions.
Most people see their pets as family members who matter in a moral sense, It's not a great stretch to extend the same love and compassion to other species. I hope this story will help folks do just that.
Very few books touch me, I mean really touch me in that I make all of my family and friends read it too. This book is the only one to do that in the past decade. I'm going to get a couple copies to donate to my tiny local library also. Buy it, you will completely enjoy it!
